Dymbëdhjetë imamët janë trashëgimtarë dhe pasardhës të Profetit (paqja qoftë mbi të e mbi familjen e tij). Të gjithë imamët rrjedhin nga fisi Kurejsh në Arabi. Profeti, para vdekjes së tij, e emëroi secilin prej tyre me emër, duke theksuar se i pari prej tyre ishte Imam Aliu (paqja qoftë mbi të), paraardhësi i të gjithë imamëve të tjerë. Ky besim i tyre përkrahet nga dëshmitë historike.

Imam Xhevadi apo Muhammed ibn Ali el-Xhevad (paqja qoftë mbi të), është imami i nëntë me radhë që e mori përsipër këtë detyrë kur ishte vetëm nëntë vjeç. Ky rast i pashembullt ishte një shkas habie, jo vetëm për armiqtë e Ehli Bejtit, por edhe për dashamirët e tyre. Sidoqoftë, është një fakt se të zgjedhurit në mesin e Ehli Bejtit, të rinj qofshin ose pleq, të gjithë i posedojnë cilësitë e njëjta, të cilat i bëjnë të denjë për pozitën e Imamatit.

Cilësia e pjekurisë në moshë të re u has për herë të parë tek profeti Isa (paqja qoftë mbi të), i cili fliste me njerëzit teksa ishte akoma në djep, si një shenjë për ndershmërinë e nënës së tij Merjemes (paqja qoftë mbi të). Kjo cilësi e njëjtë iu dhurua edhe Imam Xhevadit (paqja qoftë mbi të), si një dëshmi për Imamatin e tij. Për shkak të kësaj cilësie të pazakontë, ai u përball me shumë sfida për ta dëshmuar Imamatin e tij, veçanërisht kur Halifi abasit Me’muni e ftoi të debatonte me kryegjykatësin e kohës. Ky debat historik mbaroi me një triumf bindës të Imam Xhevadit (paqja qoftë mbi të).

Imam Xhevadi (paqja qoftë mbi të) u lind në Medine, më 10 Rexheb të vitit 195 pas  Hixhrit, që përkon me 8 prillin e vitit 811, dhe vdiq më 29 Dhul-ka’de të vitit 220 pas Hixhrit (përafërsisht 24 tetor 835), kur ishte 25 vjeç. Imamati i tij zgjati 17 vjet. Imam Xhevadi u helmua nga Halifi Mu’tasim dhe u varros në varrezat e Kurejshit (sot Kadhimije), pranë gjyshit të tij Musa el-Kadhimit (paqja qoftë mbi të).
