Larg nga sytë e opinionit, ato janë subjekt i disa nga formave më ekstreme të trajtimit çnjerëzor dhe degradues. Bile, edhe brenda komuniteteve, stigma dhe diskriminimi rezultojnë në ndarjen, izolimin,dhe shfuqizimin e njerëzve me aftësi të kufizuara mendore. Këta faktorë i lënë njerëzit me aftësi të kufizuara mendore të lëndueshme ndaj të gjitha formave të dhunës dhe abuzimit, edhe të përjashtuar nga mekanizmat mbrojtës dhe shërbimet në dispozicion të anëtarëve të tjerë të shoqërisë.

Gratë e etiketuara me aftësi të kufizuara mendore janë subjekt i tri niveleve të ndryshme të diskriminimit, të cilat ndërlidhen dhe mbështesin njëra-tjetrën në krijimin e faktorëve të rrezikut për viktimizim.

I pari është diskriminimi gjinor, i përjetuar nga të gjitha gratë, posaçërisht në shoqëritë patriarkale.

I dyti është diskriminimi për shkak të aftësisë së kufizuar, i cili është shpesh i determinuar nga qasjet shoqërore për t’i ndarë njerëzit me aftësi të kufizuara nga shoqëria “normale”.

Në fund, në shoqëritë edhe brenda komunitetit me aftësi të kufizuara, ushtrohet diskriminim kundër njerëzve me aftësi të kufizuara mendore, meqë stigma e shoqëruar me etiketën e aftësisë së kufizuar mendore është dukshëm më e madhe, sesa stigma e bashkëngjitur me aftësinë e kufizuar fizike ose ndjenjore.

Njerëzit me aftësi të kufizuara mendore janë shpesh anëtarët më së shumti të margjinalizuar dhe të dehumanizuar të shoqërisë. Si pasojë, gratë me aftësi të kufizuara mendore mund të jenë nëngrupi më i lëndueshëm nga të gjithë, kur është fjala për dhunën dhe format e tjera të abuzimit. Ato, shpesh, konsiderohen si më së paku të besueshme kur i raportojnë abuzimet, kështu që dhuna kundër grave me aftësi të kufizuara mendore, shpesh minimizohet, injorohet ose nuk zbulohet. Shoqëria, shpesh, ia bashkëngjit fajin viktimës së dhunës dhe kjo është edhe më e shpeshtë brenda këtij nëngrupi të grave.

Nëse hedhim një vështrim nga këndi tjetër, pra ai i islamit, shohim që Islami është fe, programi i së cilës synon gjithë përfshirjen në çdo aspekt. Nga këtu, në shoqërinë islame, nuk ka njerëz të diskriminuar, të shkelur e të anashkaluar, pa marrë parasysh se çfarë kategorie përfaqësojnë ata, dhe këtu kemi porosinë që Allahu i madhëruar na dha:

O ju që besuat, nuk bën të tallet një popull me një popull tjetër, meqë të përqeshurit mund të jenë më të mirë nga ata, të cilët përqeshin dikë tjetër, e as gratë me gratë e tjera, sepse mund të ndodhë që gratë e tjera të jenë më të mira se ato që përqeshin (duke e nënçmuar njëri-tjetrin) dhe mos etiketoni njëri-tjetrin me llagape.
